CRONOLOGIA SAO LAZARO #Lisboa

OCCUPY THE HOOD #occupythehood

There were no blacks at all".

The hood ought to be the first community to be here because we have been suffering than any other community with the exception of our indigenous brothers and sisters on reservations. In terms of education, housing, not enough jobs with a living wageand the refusal of people to really come to terms with the suffering of the children. We have 42 percent of Black children 42 percent of Brown children and 42 percent of Red children living in poverty. The richest nation in the history of the world: That’s a moral disgrace.”

 Cornel West Stencil

Aqui fica o manifesto do Occupy The Hood na integra:

From Occupation to Liberation, De-Colonize, Empower The Hood.
People of Color, and in particular Black, Brown and Native/Indigenous People, have been disproportionately affected by the issues that the Occupy Movement has recently raised. Unemployment rates double nationwide, disproportionate incarceration rates, wealth gap, subprime mortgages/foreclosures.

OTH seeks to present solutions to our collective problems and effect changes in policy that will improve our condition.

OTH is relying on methods of organization that have been going on prior to the origin of the Occupy Movement in the realization that we must craft a movement that uniquely and directly speaks to the issues of People of Color. Occupy The Hood looks forward to see what develops from the Occupy Movement. Occupy The Hood will work to re-establish a goal based National Black Agenda combining new energy with pre-existing efforts.

Occupy The Hood will work to address many critical issues affecting our communities:

un/under employment, poverty, mass incarceration, political prisoners, school to prison pipeline, police brutality, racial profiling, violence/murders/illegal guns, housing/foreclosures/homelessness/gentrification, health care disparities, educational disparities, food deserts, community development, reparations, economic development, entrepreneurship, gender-specific programs, youth programs, environmental justice, civic engagement, discrimination/racism

Occupy The Hood is officially active in the following Cities:

NYC (NY), Detroit (MI), Pittsburgh (PA), Seattle (WA), Philadelphia (PA), Atlanta (GA), Boston (MA), Tacoma (WA), Dallas (TX), Nola (LA), Cincinnati (OH), Portland (OR), St. Louis (MO), Cleveland (OH), Washington (DC), Richmond (VA), Los Angeles (CA) and growing

Occupy The Hood recognizes previous movements and efforts by People of Color for Liberation:

Civil Rights Movement, Black Power Movement, Poor Peoples Campaign, March on Washington, Million Man March, “Arab Spring”

Occupy The Hood acknowledges the philosophies and ideologies of:

Afrocentrism, Pan-Afrikanism

Occupy The Hood recognizes the tremendous sacrifice and individual revolutionary examples of:

Martin Luther King jr., Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Harriet Tubman, Ida B. Wells, Black Panthers, Kwame Nkrumah, Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), Fredrick Douglass, Toussaint L’Ouverture, W.E.B. DuBois, Amilcar Cabral, Paul Robeson, A. Philip Randolph, Ella Baker, CLR James, Fannie Lou Hamer, Frantz Fanon, Anna Julia Cooper, Bell Hooks, Angela Davis, Audre Lorde, Pedro Albizu Campos, Cesar Chavez, Luisa Moreno, Harry Pachon, Chicano Movement, Brown Berets, Young Lords, Che Gueverra and the numerous others from our rich, ancient and continuing History.

Occupy The Hood recognizes the holocausts and genocides of our People:

- The Native/Indigenous Holocaust; Jamestown, VA., Plymouth, MA., Trail of Tears;
- Colombus’ assault on the Americas/Caribbean; W. Indies, Central, South, Latin America; - The African Holocaust; Trans-Atlantic Slave trade (MAAFA) and Slavery in America
- Jim Crow & Over 5000 Lynchings in America, Black Wall Street, Hate Crimes
- African genocides fueled by US & European interests theft of natural resources (Gold, Diamonds, Oil)
- The Colonization of our people by: England, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, The Dutch

WE ARE THE MOST AFFECTED of the 99%

It has been said that: “Black People are on the bottom of every list that is good, and on the top of every list that is bad”
“When White America has a cold, Black America has pneumonia”
* Black unemployment is almost double the national average and in many cities/states is triple and quadruple. Unemployment rates nationally for specific groups such as Black Men and Black Teenagers are even more glaring. USA Unemployment = 9.1% Black Unemployment = 16.2 % Black males = 17.5% Black teens almost 41%
* Black and Latino incarceration rates Black man = 1 in 3 (32%) Latino man = 1 in 6 (17%) White man has = 1 in 17 (5.9%) It costs $35-50,000 annually (varies state/federal) to incarcerate
* Black and Latino Wealth Gap The wealth gaps between whites and minorities have grown to their widest levels in a quarter-century. The recession and uneven recovery have erased decades of minority gains, leaving whites on average with 20 times the net worth of blacks and 18 times that of Hispanics, according to an analysis of new Census data
* People of Color Poverty Rates Poverty rates for blacks and Hispanics greatly exceed the national average. In 2010, 27.4 percent of Blacks and 26.6 percent of Hispanics were poor, compared to 9.9 percent of non-Hispanic whites and 12.1 percent of Asians.

Poverty rates are highest for families headed by single women, particularly if they are Black or Hispanic. In 2010, 31.6 percent of households headed by single women were poor, while 15.8 percent of households headed by single men and 6.2 percent of married-couple households lived in poverty. There are also differences between native-born and foreign-born residents. In 2010, 19.9 percent of foreign-born residents lived in poverty, compared to 14.4 percent of residents born in the United States. Foreign-born, non-citizens had an even higher incidence of poverty, at a rate of 26.7 percent.

Our voices are going to blend as one.

LISBON: EUROPE´S BOTTLENECK #history #lisboa

No seguimento da apresentação do livro War in Shadows of City of light que relata os acontecimentos em Lisboa durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, reproduzimos excertos de um artigo de William D. Bayles publicado na revista Life de 28 de Abril de 1941, ainda antes dos Estados Unidos terem entrado na guerra.

Once each week, as the ship from New York noses up to the cluttered, smelly quay at Lisbon, its passengers look down upon the stranded foreign colony of Europe´s last free capital. Meeting boats and clippers has become a pastime in this city where everyone except the Portuguese – who don´t count – is waiting to go somewhere else. On the dock are American businessmen, film experts, Red Cross Directors, secretaries of legations, numerous Gestapos agents with saucer faces and badly cut German clothes, and bevy of Japanese who bow back and forth with Japanese on the boat. Behind those with some excuse of business stand the Jewish refugees, head on head by the thousands, evidently come to see what kind of lunatic leaves the U.S. for a place as mad as Europe. In the far background are the patient, threadbare Portuguese, hoping to pick up a few escudos from the strangers who have overrun their pretty little country.

Lisbon is the “bottleneck of freedom”, the tunnel wich both Britain an Germany have seen fit to keep open from Europe to the rest of the world. Here the great tide of refugees has piled up at Europe´s western edge. They fill every room in Lisbon and overflow into the little villages outside.
The cream of refugees, along with important travelers, saty at the Aviz, a gleaming white palace that was once a private home of a Portuguese grandee. They like the Aviz because it is free of Germans.
[…]

The German hangout de luxe is the Palacio Hotel in Estoril, wich also has its quota of rich Jews, Englishmen, Americans waiting to go home and exiled European politicians. It is a big modern resort hotel down the Tagus River from Lisbon, with a barman who mixes the best Manhattan cocktails i have tasted in Europe, and chambermaids paid by various powers.
[…]
The Palacio is filled with Gestapo men, all in civilian clothes but painfully German in their movements. They might as well have worn uniforms because they had just come from a two-week vacation back home nand were bronzed by Alpine sun. The Jews laugh about German stupidity but i think it may be all be part of Himmler´s strategy of terror, for bronzed prussians are much more fearsome than pale ones.
[…]

The Estoril casino is the last great gambling house in Europe still running unrestricted. You can place bets as low as $1 and the house takes only 5$ of the money. You see few portuguese there but almost every other nationality. More than half the gamblers are Jewish and i´m told that several have done so well that they have given up all thought of leaving for America. I don´t know where these refuggees get all their money bu they have it and some are willing to kend it at rates of interest of 30% and better.
The great majority of the refugees are Jews of various degrees of wealth, but Cintra, about 15 miles from Lisbon, contains a group of abou 600 Americans from France. They are ex-soldiers from 1918 who remained in France, married French girls and became French in all but name.
[…]

Portugal´s secret Polícia is supposed to be working with the Gestapo. It tries to get all foreign passports for examinations, but i was warned not to give mine up because they are rarely returned. One evening i went into my hotel bedroom and ran smack into a man snooping among my things. The fellow refused to aswer my questions and dauntered out non-chalantly as if it were part of the job. I learned he was on of the Policia.
The newspaper and propaganda setup in Lisbon is obviously controlled by the Germans. The fronts of the news shops look like those of Berlin or Frankfort, with every important German daily and most of them only a day old. A few shops display fortnight-old copies of London papers, but very few. One day i happened to be satnding in front of one of these shops, reading the headlines of the London Times an Daily Mail, when a German came by. He barged into the shop and angrily asked the proprietor why he displayed English papers. The proprieror meekly went out and took them down.
While i was in Lisbon an order went out to supress 40% of all British news in the Portuguese papers. Up to then the British had beem getting a pretty good break in headlines, but overnight everything swung to the Axis.
[...]

The Portuguese people look upon their hordes of uninvited guests with a kind of sad and timid wonderment. They are much polite and kindkly to protest, but they have been deeply shocked by some of the crass modern intrusions upon their ancient, slumbering culture. The foreign women parade Lisbon´s decorous Rossio in slacks, drink atanding at street bars where none but men stood before, and go out at night alone or without hats, wich in Lisbon is the age-old mark of the prostitute.

Coming Soon

from David Thomas (Pere Ubu, Rocket from the Tombs)

The Book of Hieroglyphs is rock and roll. It does not present stories of drug fuelled debauchery. It is without amusing anecdotes of life on the road. There are no details of the deeply engrossing lives of rock musicians.
It is the essence.

#Europe and #Greece : save us from our saviours

"There are two main stories about the Greek crisis in the media: the German-European story (the Greeks are irresponsible, lazy, free-spending, tax-dodging etc, and have to be brought under control and taught financial discipline) and the Greek story (our national sovereignty is threatened by the neoliberal technocracy imposed by Brussels).

When it became impossible to ignore the plight of the Greek people, a third story emerged: the Greeks are now presented as humanitarian victims in need of help, as if a war or natural catastrophe had hit the country.

While all three stories are false, the third is arguably the most disgusting. The Greeks are not passive victims: they are at war with the European economic establishment, and what they need is solidarity in their struggle, because it is our struggle too."

THIS CRISIS IS A URBAN CRISIS #david harvey e transição urbana

"This crisis, for me is a urban crisis in lots of ways...and i very much connected with the model of urbanization under the susteined capitalism since 1945.(...)
(...) And interestingly, the only part of the world is doing ok right know is East Asia focus on China. And what is China doing? Building cities (...)
(...) This relatinoshiop between urbanization and what´s going on in economy in general is a very important think to look out.
In a mid of a crisis, you nearly always got surplus capital and surplus labor, side by side and it seems theres no way to put them get together. But one of the ways you can solve that dilema is take the capitalism to rebuilt a city,
This happen in Paris on the 1850´s/1860´s, it have been the crise of 1848 and then Louis Napoleon came to power: ´How i´m gona do that?´ and he build all those news boulevards (...) Employed the capital and employed the labour (...)"

Tenho 34 Anos e continuo a skatar. Abraço a todos os skater"

CINEMA E ANARQUIA #video

A Terrorista

A criminosa é detida e conduzida à prisão.

O Assassinato do Ministro Plehve

Rise up

Jarda #2

L7a9ed, Lhaqed, al-Haqed, El Haqed, لحاقد / Ləḥāḳəd), operário, habitante do bairro Okacha e jogador do Movimento 20 de Fevereiro.
[…] The sentencing of a rapper on May 11, 2012 to one year in prison for “insulting the police” shows the gap between the strong free-expression language in Morocco’s 2011 constitution and the continuing intolerance for those who criticize state institutions. […] Mouad Belghouat, better known as “al-Haqed” (the sullen one), has been [in prison] since March 29 because of his rap song Kilab […] Fonte.
[…] Fonte.

The Battle of Montreal | #global | #change

STRESS FM WEEKLY COVER: #borneo and #sofiayu

This week's Stress FM cover is a photo taken by Sofia Yu in Borneo. The picture is described by the author like this:

«This photo shows the present state of malay region of borneo, more specifically ,Northern Sarawak.
The land is totally devastated due to commercial/illegal logging and cassava/ palm oil plantation, cause a massive destruction on one of the last rain forests of the world.
Borneo, is home for numerous of endemic animals and plants, and it all becoming destroys or extinct.
The same for the human animals, the tribes, such as the forest Penan, who still resist to the logging and gorvernment oppression....
There is aline, a border line on this photo which indicated the separation between Malaysia and Brunei. Brunei is a wealthy country that does not do business with wood or palm oil so it does not cut their trees, although instead, exploit the land for oil and natural gas.»

Already mentioned in the description,  the Penan are a nomadic hunter-and- gatherer people who live in the Borneo Forest.

«Even though you hardly find Primary forest outside the national parks of the Sarawak State, this people still survive with very scarce source of food-that is sago trees, fruit trees, medicinal plants and game- due to heavy logging activity that has been a great cause of deforestation in Borneo Island. Commercial Palm oil,Casava and Timber are the main reasons for the decline of wildlife-endangerous and extinct species- and the destruction of the Penan "home" and culture.»

Sofia Yu has been in Borneo last July documenting the Penan alongside them.
Her work can be visited here (flickr gallery).

Here, some of the issues documented by the author:

Shelter:They have shelters nearby the village for when they need to get things or deal with bureaucratic matters
Registration: The Penan tradicional names are not acceptable for registration. The Penan names are nature related, but in order to get ID cards they have to pick "appropriate names".
Crafts: The Penan women traditionally use forest material to make baskets, adornments and other utensils.
Resistance and Consequences : About deforestation and presence of infrastructure for plantations and gas (pipelines). Also de self-organization to cope with such damage.
Hunting and Fishing: Utensils and methods

This Sofia Yu project has been in exhibition at ES.COL.A in Oporto.

Brian Eno: Lessons in how to lie about Iraq

"In the West the calculated manipulation of public opinion to serve political and ideological interests is much more covert and therefore much more effective. Its greatest triumph is that we generally don't notice it - or laugh at the notion it even exists. We watch the democratic process taking place - heated debates in which we feel we could have a voice - and think that, because we have 'free' media, it would be hard for the Government to get away with anything very devious without someone calling them on it."

JAPROCKSAMPLER #4

1 - Les Rallizes Denudés - Strung Out Deeper Than The Night (HEAVIER THAN A DEATH IN THE FAMILY (LIVE '73-'77)

"Has a one-way trip into the Heart of Darkness ever been made on a more handsome jalopy? For those of you who love their rock 'n' roll mayhem to be grounded in traditional chord sequences à la Electric Eels and the mid-'70s Cleveland bands, here Mizutani's channeling both Lou Reed and Leigh Stephens. Side one is just the massively hooky 'Strung Out Deeper Than The Night', a fifteen-minute plod that slows down Booker T's 'Green Onions' to funeral pace."

2 - Tokyo Kid Brothers - ピース~ダダダ/下田逸郎(作曲・共作) (THROW AWAY THE BOOKS, WE'RE GOING OUT IN THE STREETS, 1971)

"Sounding as thrilling and berserk as J.A. Caesar in full flight, this amazing interpretation of Shuji Terayama's 'city play' is by far and away this ensemble's finest hour. The psychedelic guitar riffs are said to be the work of Flower Travellin' Band's Hideki Ishima, the stock chatter, the screaming, and the chorale all supporting rumours that Caesar himself was involved. Only the movie version betters this ecstatic performance."

3 - Love Live Life +1 - Facts About It All (LOVE WILL MAKE A BETTER YOU, 1971)

"This record closes brilliantly with the demented 'Facts About It All', which opens like Fuse laying a grunting 6/8 James Brown/Eric Burdon ballad on us. But no, this miniature R&B opera says in 2 minutes and 56 seconds what prog bands took a whole side to say. All hail visionary genius Ikuzo Orita for uniting his fave guitarist Kimio Mizutani with the errant free-jazz Gibson 335 of Takao Naoi, whose brittle spittle pops permanent wheelies around these slippery rhythm tracks."

4 - Magical Power Mako - Give Me Present (JUMP, 1977)

"After the impish precociousness of his debut, Mako caught up in the post-TUBULAR BELLS fallout that afflicted much music of 1974-75, so his second release, SUPER RECORD, was unlistenable New Age twaddle of the World Music variety, (...) A good slapping from occasional cohort Keiji Haino got him back on track, as evidenced from the massively crunchy Kraut-funk of JUMP. By-bye panpipes; back comes the RIOT-period Sly Stone mind-numbing bass, plus madly catchy glampop hooks, phased twin-lead guitars and ridiculous catchy hooklines."

5 - Far East Family Band - Metempsychosis (PARALLEL WORLD, 1976)

"This righteous kosmische union of Japanese commune band and legendary Krautrock producer Klaus Schultze yielded two sides of extraordinary meditative space rock, setting it apart from almost all other Japrock. (...) Like the so-called Keltic languages, Japanese often cloaks its meanings in ambiguity and none more so than in this work. Acting as a smokescreen for two seamless thirty-minute sides of music, the many titles contain multiple meanings and intentional ambiguities to further mystify listeners."

6 - 3/3 - Open a Window (SANBUN NO SAN, 1975)

"Lo-fi 1975 studio recordings from one of only five surviving acetates, released in 2005 on red vinyl, these seven long generic sub-Stooges, proto-Friction jams sum up the late commune scene even better than Dr Acid Seven's own UNDERGROUND '70s CD series. 3/3 was three ex-Maru Sankaku Shikaku members: Chiko Hige on drums, Hiroshi Higo on bass, and future No Waver/Friction leader Reck on guitar and vocals. With a sound akin to the Stooges' own RUBBER LEGS boot, y'all knows what you're in for (...) 'Open a Window' is 'Raw Power', with Friction vocals and a classic wah-wah solo."

6 - Kuni Kawachi & Flower Travellin' Band - Scientific Investigation (KIRKYOGEN, 1970)

"Despite being former organist and leader of Group Sounds underachievers Happenings Four, Kuni Kawachi nailed this sucker to the floor with an entire album of classic songs, featuring the aforementioned Flower Gods in pole positions throughout. (...) While dry, spaced-out and highly original hard-rocking ballads occupy side one, side two is possessed of a hitherto unseen acoustic side of guitarrist Hideki Ishima's playing in the highly catchy 'Graveyard of Love', 'Classroom for Women' and the late Velvets-styled 'Scientific Investigation'."

WAR IN THE SHADOWS OF THE CITY OF LIGHT #livros #lisboa #history

The Not So Neutrals of Worl War II», NY Times; «Investigative Reporters, The National Archives adn the Search for "Nazi Gold" and other Treasures» do National Archives; «Nerutral Nations Kept Nazi Forces Going» do LA Times.

Agostinho Lourenço - O Capitão Renault de Lisboa, director da Polícia de Vigilância e Defesa do Estado;

Barão Oswald von Hoyningen - Huene- Embaixador da Alemanha em Lisboa quase até ao fim da guerra. A sua ligação a Salazar e às mais importantes famílias da capital permitiram-lhe o exílio em Lisboa no pós-guerra até à data da sua morte;
